HPV infection causes genital warts in men and women. Warts are caused by a viral infection in the skin. Ordinary warts on the hands and feet are caused by viruses, which only affect humans. More than 60 different viruses that cause warts are known. Warts are rarely seen on children under the age of three, but after this age they become more frequent.
Among children between four and six, 5 to 10 per cent get warts, while 15 to 20 per cent of children between the ages of 16 and 18 have them. The frequency drops drastically again on reaching adulthood. Genital warts are the most common sexually transmitted infection. They are caused by a virus known as the human papilloma virus (HPV). A few types of wart virus are linked to changes in the cells in the cervix, which could lead to cervical cancer many years later. Visible genital warts are not linked to cervical cancer and women who have had them do not need cervical screening tests more often than other women.
