A new report based on research from the US has shown that regular binge drinking and alcoholism are responsible for weakening the immune system and putting the body at a higher risk of infection. The study, which appeared in the BMC immunology journal looked at the evidence from experiments on laboratory mice and cells and found that two major components of the immune system were blocked for at least 24 hours after periods of heavy alcohol consumption.
Staff at the University of Mississippi and the University of Louisiana were involved in the study and they confirmed the findings that some cases did not fully recover for more than 24 hours. This lowering of the immune system can lead to things like common colds, tiredness and serious infection in some cases.
The two components which are most affected by binge drinking are linked. The immune system responds to foreign bodies by using the TLR4 protein receptor which is one of the components damaged by binge drinking. This receptor is blocked by drinking and so our immune system cannot fight against any foreign bodies that it comes into contact with. Secondly, the production of cytokine is retarded during and after periods of high alcohol consumption. The immune system only knows of looming infection in the body because of cytokine.
With no cytokine to warn the body against infection and no TLR4 to boost the responses of our body against the infection, we are at serious risk from becoming very ill.
There are many things you can do to boost the immune system. A healthy diet with supplements to make up for any deficiencies teamed with regular exercise will help keep the immune system strong. You can keep your immune system at its strongest by cutting back on the amount of alcohol you drink and binge drinking at a weekend, this is the only way you can cut the risk of infection following a boozy Saturday night.
