Dealing with the loss of a loved one is difficult for anyone to go through. Of course it was devastating when my girlfriend’s mom died. She started to realize how much she was forgetting things shortly after her mom’s passing. Super organized, always on the ball and a perfectionist her forgetfulness really started to distress her. If an appointment was forgotten or she misplaced her keys, any of those simple things would fling her into a violent anxiety attack. However, she immediately thought that this forgetfulness must be from some sort of undiagnosed disease and then those thoughts would attack her… what if it’s a brain tumor or cancer? What if I die? Why can’t I get this Panic away from me?
Unable to concentrate on anything as time went on the thoughts became obsessive and overwhelming, leaving her feel unsure of herself and scatter-brained. All of these obsessive, irrational thoughts would send her into an anxiety or panic attack and spiralling out of control. She spent hours researching what disease she had on the internet. She was certain she was going crazy. Would her family and friends think she’s crazy too? Fearing the worst she decided not to talk about it. She was scared.
Death is a huge tragedy and grieving is normal and takes time. It’s not uncommon to feel forgetful, overwhelmed or scatter-brained. Her imagined thoughts seemed completely real because at the time her mind couldn’t think logically so every time she forgot something she’d run to the doctor. She would request all sorts of tests but when the doctor diagnosed her with General Anxiety Disorder it was bittersweet, she felt a sense of relief, finally, but also didn`t know how to handle her anxiety or how to make it better.
