In July 1968, John B. Calhoun, an American research psychologist, once conducted a very famous research on the influence of open space on your mind. The experiment, surely, involved rats, not people yet his results were broadly regarded to be a applicable. Here is what he did.

He placed four pairs of rats into an ideal universe. There were no predators, no inadequacy of food or drinks and of course, no scarcity of mating partner. Essentially those rats have anything they desire – with the exception of space.

Initially, every little thing looks just great. The rats lived as they shall be. Their community grew very fast, doubling around every 55 days. Pretty soon, when the population of the rats reached 620, the area he was putting them in became full. This was day 315 of the experiment. Surprisingly, the population started to decline since then… to a point where the last surviving birth was at day 600. At the same time, between day 315 to day 600, the rats behaved intermittently.

No longer do males protect their boundary and females. No longer do they engage in courtship or fighting. Rather they withdrew to be anti-social, and clean themselves. Due to their absence of scars and beautiful coats, those group of males were called “the pretty ones”.

The females, on the other hand, become more offensive, stopped giving birth and get rid of their junior before weaning was complete. After day 600, the population started to decline into extinction.

Look familiar? Redundant to mention, those rats are extremely unhappy during this period of time. Did the insufficient space and advancing population density affecting your psychology? Who knows? Perhaps so, maybe not. However providing that you are similar me, you desire to find out.

Try this out: At least once a week, go to an open area. Be it a pasture or out of city. Many people feel relieved, kind of a liberation when in open area. No mental exercises or brain training exercises can substitute this.
